A concert with either of these bands guarantees an evening of outstanding music at the cutting edge of innovation. It is sure to stick in the memory. Next May audiences throughout Scotland can hear them both on the same night - an unrepeatable experience not be missed.
John McSherry (uillean pipes) and Chris Stout (fiddle) are arguably the two leading musicians of their generations on these instruments in Ireland and Scotland. This tour sees them performing together with their bands. With John McSherry in At First Light are Donal O'Connor (fiddle/keyboards); Tony Byrne (guitar/vocals); and Francis McIlduff (uillean pipes/whistles/bodhran). With Chris Stout are Catriona McKay (clarsach/piano); Fraser Fifield (saxophone); Malcolm Stitt (guitar); and Neil Harland (bass).
John McSherry won two All Ireland Championship titles by the age of fifteen, and at eighteen was the youngest ever winner of the much-coveted senior 'Oireachtas' piping competition. Founder member of Tamalin and Lunasa, and subsequently member of Coolfin, he is fifteen years later a virtuosic, world-renowned uillean piper.
'When four of the busiest young maestros on the traditional Irish music scene get together, it's sure to have trad fans wetting their lips and queuing up for tickets... So make a note now to hear this formidable foursome on their travels.'
Neil Johnston - Belfast Telegraph/Tradmusic.com
Shetlander Chris Stout, nominated in two categories in this year's Folk on 2 awards, is firmly grounded in his traditional roots but never afraid to explore new territory. He sets himself apart not just because of his astounding technical ability and musicianship but also because of his determination to take the music to new levels of innovation and experimentation.
'Not so much live music, but music alive'
Rob Adams, The Herald on Chris Stout Quintet
