Ryan Quigley (band leader / lead trumpet / arranger / composer)

A leading light on the Scottish Jazz scene, Ryan Quigley was born in Northern Ireland, moving to Glasgow at a young age. He briefly studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama before leaving to join r 'n b band The commitments. A much in demand trumpet player, Ryan has been involved in many projects, working with internationally renowned musicians from the worlds of jazz, pop, indie and folk, including Allan Bergman, The Bad Plus, Tim Garland, Curtis Stiegers, Bob Geldof, Sharleen Spiteri, Eddie Reader, Justin Currie and Isobel Campbell. He has travelled the world with Salsa Celtica, The Unusual Suspects, The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, Scottish Symphony Orchestra, The RTE Concert Orchestra and The Irish National Symphony Orchestra. His main interests, however, are writing and performing with his own quartet, quintet, sextet and big band. In 2007 he was commissioned to write for the SNJO's highly acclaimed tribute to John Coltrane, while in 2008, his dazzling solos blew away a packed audience at the UK Showcase of British Jazz in Toronto, leading to two encores. His debut CD, Laphroaig-ian Slip, was named release of the year by Radio Scotland in 2008. 2009 saw him as busy as ever, performing with Brass Jaw at the Jazzahead conference in Bremen, undertaking a Jazz Services Promoter's Choice Award tour of the UK and playing with his Sextet at three major jazz festivals throughout the UK. He is the recipient of several awards, including both the Scottish and Parliamentary Jazz Awards for best trumpeter and Ensemble respectively.
