Ewan Robertson
Breabach: guitar, voice
Ewan is from the village of Carrbridge, in Strathspey. He was introduced to traditional music from an early age, attending ceilidhs in the village hall and listening to Capercaillie tapes in the back of his mum's rusty old VW Beetle! At the age of 7, Ewan began learning both the fiddle and chanter through lessons at school and private tuition from John MacDougal (pipes) and Eric Pirrie (fiddle). Alongside this tuition, the Feis movement in Strathspey largely contributed to Ewan's continued enthusiasm for traditional music, providing opportunities to perform with other young people and learn from those who inspired him. In 2000, following a successful audition, Ewan was selected to attend the National Centre of Excellence for Traditional Music in Scotland. His principal studies were fiddle and pipes however a lack of accompanists at the school led to Ewan experimenting with the guitar. Whilst at University studying for an Honours degree in Outdoor Education, he continued playing guitar, using the vibrant Glasgow session scene to develop a unique, and very driving style of guitar accompaniment. His playing went from strength to strength and by the time he graduated in 2005 Ewan was already proving to be a popular accompanist. More recently, Ewan has been attracting attention for his singing and performances with Donald Shaw and Charlie Mckerron, The Rachel Walker Band, Dannsa, Gary Innes and Six Foot Ginger, are keeping him very busy both at home and abroad. Ewan now lives back in Carrbridge where he is a part-time fire-fighter and terrible golfer!
