Hebrides Ensemble has built a reputation as Scotland's foremost chamber group, touring frequently throughout Scotland, appearing at international music festivals and broadcasting regularly on BBC Radio 3.  Their concerts are acclaimed for their imaginative and innovative programming and for the outstanding quality of performance.

The Ensemble has commissioned and premiered new works by more than forty composers including Gordon Mcpherson, Stuart MacRae, Haflidi Hallgrimsson and Sally Beamish.  Each year it performs a celebrated series of concerts at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

The 2004/05 season included a Scottish Arts Council Tune Up tour and a major new music theatre commission, Good Angel Bad Angel, from composer Lyell Cresswell and writer Ron Butlin based on a story by Robert Louis Stevenson.  Festival appearances include a residency at the St Magnus Festival in Orkney and a performance of music by Elliot Carter at the 2005 Edinburgh International Festival.  Future plans include a further Scottish Arts Council Tune Up tour, a new commission from Nigel Osborne and a series of 'rush-hour' concerts in Spring 2006.

Hebrides Ensemble's recent CD of music by Lyell Cresswell for NMC has received the highest critical acclaim.  A further CD featuring music by John Bevan Baker will be released later in 2005.

Tune Up Tour

Hebrides Ensemble will perform Debussy's Sonata for violin, cello and piano and Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time.  Messiaen composed this work while he was a prisoner of war being held in Stalag VIII-A.  Its ethereal beauty was first revealed in a performance with the composer at the piano in front of 5000 fellow in-mates.  'Never', said Messiaen, 'was I listened to with such rapt attention and comprehension.'

The programme also includes recent commissions - Marina Adamia's Penumbra, which explores, through sound, the 'shadowland between light and shade' and the first UK performance of Haflidi Hallgrimsson - Notes from a Diary Op.33, which draws inspiration from The Diary of Anne Frank.
