Tune up: The Paolo Fresu Sextet

A Kind of Porgy and Bess

Sardinian trumpeter Paolo Fresu has absorbed the influences of Miles Davies and Louis Armstrong into his own quietly passionate individual sound.

The winner of France's prestigious Bobby Jaspar and Django d'Or prizes in 1996, he has recently enjoyed great success with his deeply personal Gershwin and Miles interpretation, Kind of Porgy and Bess. One of a new breed of high profile Europeans (and one of the impressive group of Italian virtuosi) who have contributed to a popular resurgence of contemporary jazz across the continent, Fresu has also been in great demand with other bandleaders, such as the French/Vietnamese guitarist Nyguen-Le, last heard at Glasgow International Jazz Festival.

On extended tour for the first time in the UK, Fresu will bring Scotland into direct contact with the inspiration and talent of creative music from a Europe that has rediscovered its own kind of jazz.
