Tune up: Malinky & Daimh

Malinky's nomination for a BBC Radio 2 Folk award 2003 confirms their reputation as one of the most inventive young bands on the contemporary UK folk scene. Their 2002 CD Ravens (Greentrax) blends brooding ancient ballads, powerful and passionate original songs in traditional style and dazzling instrumental playing. Lead vocalist Karine Polwart recently won the Best Singer award at the inaugural Traditional Music awards in Edinburgh, confirming her growing reputation as one of the finest Scots singers of her generation. The rest of the band are Steve Byrnes on vocals, bouzouki and guitar, Mark Dunlop on Bodhran, whistles and vocals, fiddler Jon Bews and the button box and whistle player Leo McCann.

Daimh (pronounced da-eve) is the Gaelic word for affinity or kinship. The band is an exciting combination of musicians from Ireland, Cape Breton Island, the West highlands of Scotland and the Irish/American scene. Daimh embodies the close links that still exist in today's Gaelic world. Each of the members draw from their own cultures and traditions, yet lock together musically to produce a sound which has been setting audiences alight worldwide.

On tour each band will play a set each and then a combined set when all of the musicians take the stage to marry the energies and talents of the next generation of Scots and Gaelic music.
