Tune up: John Rae's Celtic Feet's Hungarian Collaboration

This is a new collaboration which brings together John Rae's Celtic Feet and two of Hungary's most innovative gypsy musicians. The collaboration focuses on different approaches to folk traditions and explores the way that European musicians today are increasingly exploring the riches of their own vernacular music traditions alongside the inspiration of African/American jazz.

Celtic Feet is led by drummer John Rae, whose infectious blend of jazz and traditional music draws together some of Scotland's finest in a critically acclaimed ensemble that has made a big impact throughout the country. Together they create music that uses traditional motifs and jazz harmony to create a distinctly Scottish sound where fiery jazz impro and traditional Celtic music each find an equal voice. The band consists of Phil Bancroft (saxophone), Mario Lima Caribe (bass), Brian Kellock (piano), Eilidh Shaw (violin) and Martin Green (concertina).

This project has been specially devised as part of Magyar Magic - Hungary in Focus 2004, a year-long season of Hungarian culture in the UK marking Hungary's accession to the EU in 2004, and co-ordinated by the Hungarian Cultural Centre. It will bring into the mix the richly evocative sounds and headlong rhythms of Hungary's massively talented community of gypsy musicians, including the extrovert violinist/accordionist Robert Farkas, and also make use of the country's unique national instrument, the cymbalon. The project will also tour the rest of the UK and into Europe, including concerts in Hungary.

Each piece, a fresh idea, another facet comes into play, this is music with a smile - The Herald
